The story

From quiet classrooms to students standing on chairs cheering.

Wings Financial is a credit union serving members across Minnesota and beyond. Their financial education team wanted a Gen Z-appropriate experience that beat what students were already used to: phones, TikTok, anything but a finance lecture.

01

Engaging Gen Z is a top priority for Altra

Financial education is one of Altra’s biggest opportunities to build early trust and awareness among future members. However, Gen Z isn’t engaged by slideshows. Altra wanted to speak their language through games that are interactive and fun.

“Cashy has offered us the opportunity to focus on one of our strategic initiatives for shaping the future of our credit union — youth.” Lori Horstman, VP of Member Experience & Advocacy, Altra Federal Credit Union

Students want to play it every day

Once students experience Cashy, they’re hooked.

“Students want to play it every day. Teachers tell me they have to remind them there’s other curriculum to cover.” Tony Beyer, Financial Literacy Coordinator, Altra Federal Credit Union

What used to be a quiet classroom now buzzes with laughter, and competition. Students start wanting to learn more and more about finance.

03

Jumping right in, no setup needed

Tony says simplicity was key. Cashy’s plug-and-play design means there’s no setup or training required.

“I just start playing it. It doesn’t take long for students to figure it out — they pick it up fast.” Tony Beyer, Financial Literacy Coordinator, Altra Federal Credit Union

Tony opens the game, gives a quick intro, and lets the students take over — keeping the focus on fun, participation, and learning.

04

Play and discuss

Cashy is built around active learning — students don’t just listen, they do. They make decisions, play through real-life financial situations, and see the results of their choices unfold.

“After playing, we reflect and talk about what they learned. It’s been really effective.” Tony Beyer, Financial Literacy Coordinator, Altra Federal Credit Union

It’s hands-on learning that sparks real conversations and helps concepts stick long after the game ends.
