Michigan’s largest credit union, founded by teachers, goes live with Cashy

Lake Michigan Credit Union has gone live with Cashy, giving its staff a library of live financial education games and interactive presentations to run in schools, branches, and community events across Michigan.

Lake Michigan Credit Union is the largest credit union in Michigan and the thirteenth largest in the country, with more than $15 billion in assets, 645,000 members and 75 branches. It began in 1933 as Grand Rapids Teachers Credit Union, founded by 13 teachers pooling their money during the Depression. Financial education has been part of the institution since that first day, and the credit union brought in Cashy to let more of its staff deliver it without preparation or presenting experience.

It started with sixty branch staff on a group call

The partnership began when sixty of the credit union’s branch staff played Cashy together on a group video call, before any agreement was in place.

“Lake Michigan was founded by teachers, so financial education has been in the business since day one. Sixty of their branch staff played on a single call and every survey afterwards came back asking to run it themselves.”

Mart Vainu, CEO, Cashy

What a session looks like

A standard Cashy workshop pairs a twenty minute interactive presentation with a twenty minute live game. One staff member runs it from a single screen, and the audience plays along on phones, Chromebooks, or laptops. Several games also run with no participant devices at all, for classrooms with phone bans, senior centers, and rooms where devices are not available.

Scale across the state

Lake Michigan Credit Union employs more than 1,800 staff across 75 branches, including locations in Florida. A financial education program at that footprint is limited by how many colleagues will deliver a session, not by how many communities want one.
